Downside Fisher Activities

The club runs a structured youth programme that uses a range of activities for informal youth work. Here are some of the key activities on offer:

Arts Room
Disciplines as diverse as papier-mâché, modelling, painting and silk screen printing encourage ideas, creativity and self expression amongst club members, with uniquely themed sessions run by specialist art tutors.

Boxing
From non-contact fitness training for the Juniors to ABA supervised training bouts for the Seniors, the renowned Fisher Boxing Club develops discipline, technique and stamina through structured classes led by qualified coaches.

Drama Workshops
Working in partnership with leading drama organisations, the club’s staff run workshops that build confidence and encourage self expression in DFYC members, and which lead on to fully rehearsed productions.

Football
FA qualified coaches teach ball skills and techniques and increase fitness levels of club members who participate in these two hour sessions that culminate in proper match practise.

IT Computer Suite
A busy, supported environment where club members are encouraged to learn new software packages and explore the web for additional learning resources on a range of subjects that can help with homework, social issues or leisure interests.

Swimming Pool
A valuable resource where members are offered the chance to take swimming lessons or play water polo and water basketball under the close supervision of qualified lifeguards.

At weekends a local SCUBA diving group uses the pool, and senior members of the club can receive free PADI training and go on dives in different places around the UK and abroad.

Tunnel Project
Conducted in partnership with other youth initiatives in the area, this was initially conceived as a three-year project to address the problem of inter-gang ‘warfare’ on local housing estates.

It is developing into an increasingly active community outreach project. Youth workers from the Club meet and talk with groups of disaffected young people in the area, endeavouring to influence their idle hours away from drug use and vandalism into more constructive channels through sport, drama and other activities.
